PCIE Tutorial: Transaction Layer Packet Types and Headers


PCIE supports three traffic types on link, transaction layer packets (TLPs) which are initiated by transaction layer, data link layer packets (DLLPs) which are initiated by data link layer, and order sets which are initiated at physical layer. As shown below, only TLPs are routed across PCIE links and DLLPs and order sets are for local link management and are not routed across links.
