Make it to the Right and Larger Audience

How to use Visual Editor?
Using visual editor is straightforward. If "Visual" mode is selected (by clicking "Visual" button), what you see is what will be displayed in your post. If you are comfortable with HTML tags, you can also use "Text" mode.

Visual editor has built-in support to upload image, video, audio. For supported media formats, you can check here.

Note: you can also use "Add Media" to upload documents such as pdf, word, ppt, xls, etc. Another way to upload documents when creating a post is to use "Attachments" at the end of post form.

To upload an image, for example, click "Add Media" button and "Insert Media" pop up window will appear. Use "Upload Files" to browse-and-upload or drag-and-drop file.

After image is uploaded, you can change settings about image alignment and size, and then click "Insert into page".

Default visual editor textarea is not large. You can use mouse to drag the symbol at the bottom right corner of textarea to change textarea size.
How to use Syntax Highlighter?
You can use syntax highlighter to highlight code syntax and show line number in post, forum, and comment as below:

To do so, in visual editor, click syntax highlighter button to bring up synthax highlighter pop up window

In pop up window, enter title, select the language of your code (use default if not supported), and type in your code as shown below

By default, syntax highlighter will display all the code. If it is long code, the display window can occupy a big space. You can use "Height" property to restrict the height of the display window. 700px is a good number to use. Display window will set the height to 700px and give user a vertical scoll bar to browse the code.

For comment, you can click "crayon" button to bring up syntax highlighter window.

Follow the same way, once you add the code, and you will see something as below in textarea. Note you can always type below in comment and post area directly without using highlighter pop up window.

<pre title="c samp" class="lang:default decode:true ">
</pre>
How is image, video, and audio supported?
A variety of image formats such as png, jpg, etc. are supported. You can upload images using "Add Media" in visual editor, or when posting comments or activity streams.

You can upload video directly using "Add Media" in visual editor. MP4 format is strongly recommended. You can upload wmv, but it may not display well across different browsers. FLV format is not allowed due to security concern.

You can upload audio directly using "Add Media" in visual editor. Expected audio format is MP3.
To add an url link in virtual editor, click on "Insert/edit link" button and a window will pop up. Copy the target url to "Url" entry. By default, the same link is automatically copied to "Text to display". This entry is what is displayed to reader. So, normally you'd like to edit it to something more meaningful than a human-unfriendly http link. Please use "Nofollow" for Rel and "New window" for Target.

How to inline link or embed an external doc in post?
To inline link an external doc in vitural editor, either in virtual or text mode, you can type in something like:
[gview file="http://www.sample.com/sample.pdf"]
here http://www.sample.com/sample.pdf is the external url link of the doc.

You can not use this link directly. One way you can do this is to find "&url=..." part in this link and manually convert it from
http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sample.com%2Ffiles%2Fdoc%2Fsample.pdf
to
http://www.sample.com/files/doc/sample.pdf.
It is actually straightforward by replacing "%2F" with "/" and "%3A%2F%2F" with "://".

By default, the height of document viewer window is 500px. This is good enough for landscape type document like slides. For portrait type document, you can increase the window height to ie. 700px by adding height option:
[gview height="700" file="http://www.sample.com/sample.pdf"]
How to embed Slideshare slides?
To embed a slides from Slideshare.net, you can find the embed share snippet for the slides as below:
<iframe src="//www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/key/cJeymoFhXn3kbp" width="425" height="355" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no" style="border:1px solid #CCC; border-width:1px; margin-bottom:5px; max-width: 100%;" allowfullscreen> </iframe> <div style="margin-bottom:5px"> <strong> <a href="..." title="..." target="_blank">...</a> </strong> from <strong><a href="..." target="_blank">...</a></strong> </div>

To embed in Valpont, you only need to use the src link (highlighted in yellow) and post as below:
[iframe src="//www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/key/cJeymoFhXn3kbp"]
How to make spreadsheet interactive online?
You can upload spreadsheets to Valpont directly, but it will be displayed as read only. Other users will not be able to change parameters and check result online, although they can always download the spreadsheet and run it locally.

< iframe ...> < /iframe>

Second, copy and paste above snippet in your post but modify it to:
[iframe ...]
Basically change "< iframe" to "[iframe" and "> < /iframe>" to just "]" and keep "..." part the same. Then that is it. Your spreadsheet is interactive now.

In details:
• If you upload a spreasheet, use the default option to convert it to Zoho Docs format. Note: Zoho supports both MS XLS and Open Source Document odt.

• Open and check the spreadsheet. If it is good to go, click "Share", then "Embed", then "External Blog/Site".

• In popup window, check "Allow to export". If you want to protect and hide your formula, you can check "Hide and lock formula cells". Note that it will also lock your cells, so you need to make sure all of the inputs that you allow user to change are pure numbers, rather than something like "=...". "=". This is interpreted as formula, and user can't change it if spreadsheet is locked. Another note is Zoho ignores MS XLS lock and hide, and you need to redo it this way.

• Click ok and another popup window appears and show snippet.

• Zoho spreadsheet has limitations. For example, user defined function is not supported. So it is a good practice to check if your spreadsheet functions well.
How to post and show the content of a text file of various types?
Generally you can zip your text files with other files and post it. But if you'd like to show the content of text file at the post page without dowloading it first, there are a couple of ways to do so.

First, you can upload text file using "Add Media" in Virtual editor or as an attachment. You may need to manually change the file type to txt at first otherwise Virtual editor may complain the file type is not supported. Then embedded document viewer will display the text file at post page, similar to How to inline link or embed an external doc in post?. But the drawbacks are syntax is not highlighed and there is no line number shown either.

Second, maybe a better way is to use syntax highlighter to show the text file as described in How to use Syntax Highlighter?. You can copy and paste your text file content to syntax highligher. Note you may want to set "Height" to limit the height of code display window.
What are [Ref] and [Notes] in post title?
This feature was suggested by our users. Although Valpont provides a built-in option to categorize posts into blog/news, paper/document, and IP/file three types, it is often preferred to further tell what the post is about in post title. For example, the following title tags are suggested to put into post title. Please feel free to add your own title tags. Others will follow if they see your that title tags are helpful.
• [Ref]: if the document in the post is not originated from you, but rather, you are recommending another person's doc for discussion, you can use [Ref] to show that it is a Reference document.
• [Notes]: class notes for college classes.
• [Book]: ebook.

What is the maximum file size that can be uploaded?
Users can upload files up to 32MB. But, if the file size is more than 12MB, embeded document viewer (EDV) won't display the document. EDV is a very convenient way for other users to view your articles. In this case, you may want to split your files into a couple of (or more) smaller ones.

To split a large PDF file, you can use Chrome browser. Open the pdf file in Chrome, opt to print but change destination to "Save as PDF", and then you can select page ranges to print/save.
How to add math formulas using latex?
Users can follow below format to use latex for math formulas:
$your-latex-code-here$

For example, type in something like
$i\hbar\frac{\partial}{\partial t}\left|\Psi(t)\right>=H\left|\Psi(t)\right>$
and math fomula will be displayed as

To change displayed latex formula size, you can use [latex size=3]your-latex-code-here[/latex]. Latex size is from -4 (smallest) to 4 (largest) with default size 0 (if size is not specified).
How to split a post into multiple pages?
If you have a long post, you can split it into multiple pages for ease of reading. There are two ways to do it.

First, you can add below to the places in your post that you want to split. You can replace xyz with the page title. When post is displayed, page titles are displayed in a table at the end of post content of each page.
[nextpage title="xyz"]

<!--nextpage-->
Note that within visual editor, you need to add above snippet in text view and not in visual view. Otherwise, visual editor automatically changes the html tags.

Note if you have multiple posts and you want to group them into a series, you can use How to use post series?
How to use post series?
Post series is used to group several posts into one series. A series box is shown at each of the posts in series, which displays all of the posts in this series. This way, the user can have an overall picture and easily browse other posts. Note: if you simply have a long post and would like to display it as one post but with multiple pages, you can use How to split a post into multiple pages?

To use post series, you need to create post series first by using "New/Edit Series" in "POSTS" tab of your user space. Once series is created, you can add posts to series in post create or edit window.

The current limitation of post series is that posts in series are always in chronological order of post creation time.
How to use coauthors feature?
Coauthors is used to show multiple authors of a post. It is only supported in post type and not in other types such as reference&review, premium, and collaboration.

When you create or edit a post, you can see "Post Coauthors" input text box. Here, you can type in coauthors of the post separated by a comma. If the coauthor is already a Valpont user, you can use his or her Valpont user name. If the coauthor is not a Valpont user yet, you can just type in his or her name. Later when he or she signs up, he/she can contact you to switch to his/her Valpont user name.

Coauthors will show in the order that you input them in "Post Coauthors" text box. You don't need to include your own name in "Post Coauthors" box. By default, you are the first author of the post, and Valpont automatically add you to post coauthors. However, if you are not the first author, you may want to include your name in the proper order in "Post Coauthors" box as well.
Can I embed another website using iframe?
Generally Valpont doesn't allow embedding another website, especially commercial site. If you'd like to embed another site in, for example, Reference&Review to ease reading, please contact us and request to do so. We'll respond asap if that site is allowed to be embedded. If allowed, you can use below to embed it.

[iframe src="another-website-url"]
How to add title and use hashtag in wall messages?
Group and user wall is for users to post short messages about design tips, industry news/trends, etc. Unlike other post format, wall message doesn't have title field. As a matter of fact it only has one field for message content. The firt paragraph is automatically treated as message title and is displayed with different color. For example,

1st Line: message title line.
2nd line: 2nd line must be an empty line otherwise message content is also treated as message title until the first empty line is met.
Following lines: message content which can have multiple paragraphs.

Wall messages can contain tags which are used in group topics to only display wall messages with matching tags. Tag is also used in tag-based content search. Hashtag format, ie., #science, is used to embedded tag in wall message. Up to THREE tags are supported in a message. User can specify more hashtags but only the first three will be recognized.
